Benchmarking
EQ Agriculture has for a long time recognised benchmarking as a key tool in assessing and monitoring business performance. Each year we publish our now eagerly awaited benchmarking report, based upon the actual financial results of many of our arable farmers in eastern Scotland.
Benchmarking involves a detailed analysis of farm accounts, restating them in a management accounting format, and expressing key performance indicators, such as output, variable costs and fixed costs, on £ per acre basis.
This process is repeated over a large number of similar farms to enable weighted average figures to be calculated for the whole group. Individual businesses are then compared to the group average, or 'benchmark'.
We also operate a benchmarking programme for non accounts clients - 'Express Benchmarking'. Three years of financial results are compared to broader industry targets and this approach can be applied to any farming sector. This provides a high level overview of the financial health of your farming business.
Benchmarking your business will allow you to:-
- compare your performance with similar businesses
- highlight your strengths and weaknesses
- identify problem areas that require investigation
- gauge the overall scope for improvement
- provide a focal point for business performance review
