Summer Student Profile
Gemma Keillor - Summer Student 2005
"At the moment I am a student at Strathclyde University, I am about to enter the final year of my BA in Accounts and Finance. During the summer of my penultimate year I spent 12 weeks working within the Forfar office of EQ Chartered Accountants.
My main reason for applying for a summer placement was to widen my experience of accountancy in practice, having undertaken a placement within a small practice the previous year. I also wanted to ensure that accountancy was the right career for me.
During the placement I gained exposure to a wide variety of tasks, in particular accounts preparation involving bank reconciliations and analysis of creditors, debtors and stock. It gave me a sense of achievement to be involved with the process from start to finish; the feedback given by senior staff was excellent.
I found the support given by all staff to be extremely useful and encouraging. The friendly atmosphere within the office allowed me to settle in quickly, this was particularly reassuring at the beginning as I was never made to feel my questions were irrelevant.
Although my placement only lasted 12 weeks I was made to feel part of the team sharing in "bacon roll events" and attending various social events, including the staff BBQ.
All the above led to a useful and enjoyable experience."
